The heads of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization came away from the first U.S.-WHO Strategic Dialogue on Tuesday with a commitment to the creation of a new financial intermediary fund for global pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, and urged other world leaders to help fund it. Xavier Becerra and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus agreed that national and global capacities “must be strong, agile, ever improving, and always fit-for-purpose,” noting recent outbreaks of infectious diseases including Ebola, monkeypox and polio. In the U.S., known cases of COVID are continuing to ease and now stand at their lowest level since late April, although the true tally is likely higher given how many people are testing at home, where the data are not being collected. The daily average for new cases stood at 51,259 on Tuesday, according to a New York Times tracker, down 21% from two weeks ago. The daily average for hospitalizations was down 15% at 28,974, while the daily average for deaths is down 4% to 415. Globally, the confirmed case tally rose above 616.2 million on Tuesday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins, while the death toll is above 6.54 million with the U.S. leading the world with 96.2 million cases and 1,057,273 deaths.
