Anti-fraud campaign: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Over the past few months, a major awareness campaign has been underway to combat online fraud. The campaign is centred on the slogan: ‘If it seems too good to be true, it probably is’.

The first stage of the campaign focused on fraud involving cryptocurrencies. The second stage, currently in progress, addresses investment fraud. Later in the year, a final stage will be devoted to ‘friendship scams’.

The FSMA is playing an active role in the campaign, in collaboration with the FPS Economy and the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Employment, Economy and Consumer Affairs, Kris Peeters.

There have been numerous reports of investment scams. Each year, hundreds of consumers and businesses have been victims of crooks who offer them alternative financial products that look ‘attractive’. The awareness campaign provides consumers with information that will enable them to recognize these sorts of fraudulent practices and invites potential investors always to verify who it is they are dealing with.

More information about the campaign is available in French (www.tropbeaupouretrevrai.be) or Dutch (www.temooiomwaartezijn.be) only.
