There is more good news on the COVID front, as the daily average of new cases has fallen to the lowest level since Dec. 5, which is before omicron was the dominant variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The seven-day average of new cases totaled 113,964 on Thursday, down 68% from two weeks ago, according to a New York Times tracker. The daily average for hospitalizations were 78,213, down 40% from two weeks ago, while those in intensive care units fell to 14,824, or 19% of hospitalizations. Meanwhile the daily average of COVID-19 deaths was down 13% from two weeks ago to 2,306, but is still above the September peak of 2,109. Meanwhile, the number of fully vaccinated American adults grew to 192.96 million, or 74.7% of the population, according data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On a global basis, the total tally for COVID-19 cases climbed to 420.08 million as of Friday morning and the death toll rose above 5.86 million, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. leads the world with a total COVID-19 case count of 78.27 million and death toll of 931,742.
