EIA reports a smaller-than-expected weekly rise in U.S. natural-gas supplies

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on Thursday that domestic natural-gas supplies rose by 52 billion cubic feet for the week ended Oct. 21. That compared with a market forecast for an increase of 61 billion cubic feet, according to an estimate from the Dow Jones economic calendar. Total working gas stocks in storage stand at 3.394 trillion cubic feet, down 142 billion cubic feet from a year ago and 197 billion cubic feet below the five-year average, the government said. Following the data, November natural gas NGX22, -2.78% was down 5.1 cents, or 0.9%, at $5.555 per million British thermal units on the contract’s expiration day. Prices traded at $5.536 before the supply data.
