nasdaq sp 500 turn negative rally in stocks on thursday loses steam

U.S. stocks struggled to hold higher ground late in the session Thursday, with the technology-laden Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 index both turning negative. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.08% was up about 19 points, or 0.1%, near 33,333, at last check, but the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.07% was down 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.58% shed 0.7%, giving up earlier gains. Investors have been question whether the latest rally in stocks, following a strong July, has staying power, particularly with inflation still running high, despite its retreat to a 8.5% annual rate in July from 9.1% a month before, which was a 41-year high.
