There are 148 stocks in the S&P 500 SPX, -2.84% that have hit fresh 52-week lows as of midday trading Monday, or 29.4% of the benchmark large-capitalization company tracker’s components. That percentage is higher than for the S&P Mid Cap 400, of which 96 stocks, or 24.0% of its components hit 52-week lows; and for the S&P Small Cap 600 SML, -3.28%, in which 135 stocks, or 22.5%, of its components hit 52-week lows. In comparison, 678 NYSE listed stocks, or 20.5%, have hit 52-week lows Monday, and 985 Nasdaq stocks, or 20.4%, have hit 52-week lows. The most stocks that have hit 52-week lows in a day so far this year was 1,042 for the NYSE on May 9 and 1,712 for the Nasdaq on Jan. 24, according to FactSet data. The S&P 500 slumped 2.8% in midday trading, putting it on track for the lowest close in 15 months (March 4, 2021), and to close 20.95% below its Jan. 3, 2022 record close of 4,796.64.
