Stocks edge higher to begin 2022 with gains

U.S. stocks opened slightly higher Monday, kicking off the new year on a positive note after gaining substantial ground in 2021. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.68% was up 90 points, or 0.2%, at 34,429, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.64% rose 0.4% to 4,785.90. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.20% was up 0.8% at 15,764.09.
