The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday told people they should take additional at-home COVID-19 tests in some instances even if they’ve tested negative for the virus using an at-home rapid test. If someone has tested negative but has COVID_19 symptoms, they should wait 48 hours and test a second time. And if an individual has tested negative and does not have symptoms but was exposed to COVID-19, the FDA recommends they test 48 hours after the first negative test and then again 48 hours after the second negative test. Taking the additional steps will help “reduce the risk an infection may be missed (false negative result) and to help prevent people from unknowingly spreading the SARS-CoV-2 virus to others,” the regulator said. The FDA also suggested using tests from different manufacturers.
