Coronavirus tally: Canada may drop COVID vaccine requirement for entrants by end September

Canada will likely drop the COVID-19 vaccine requirement for people who enter Canada by the end of September, an official familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Canada, like the United States, requires foreign nationals to be vaccinated when entering the country. It is not immediately known whether the U.S. will make a similar move by Sept. 30. Unvaccinated travelers who are allowed to enter Canada are currently subject to mandatory arrival tests and a 14-day quarantine. The news comes as U.S. known cases of COVID are continuing to ease, although the true tally is likely higher given how many people are testing at home, where the data are not being collected. The daily average for new cases stood at 57,322 on Tuesday, according to a New York Times tracker, down 24% from two weeks ago. The daily average for hospitalizations was down 13% at 30,990, while the daily average for deaths is down 2% to 413. Globally, the confirmed case tally rose above 613 million on Wednesday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins, while the death toll is above 6.52 million with the U.S. leading the world with 95.8 million cases and 1,054,333 deaths.
