The U.S. was heading toward 900,000 COVID fatalities on Friday, as the daily death toll continued to climb above 2,600. The U.S. is averaging 2,632 deaths a day, according to a New York Times tracker, up 30% from two weeks ago and the highest toll since last winter and above the peak surge in the fall when delta was dominant. Cases, now that the highly infectious omicron variant is dominant, are coming down from their January peak and averaging 356,256 a day, down 52% from two weeks ago. Hospitalizations are down 18% from two weeks ago at 130,209 a day on average. On a global basis, the total tally for COVID-19 cases hiked up above 388.5 million, and the death toll rose above 5.71 million, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. leads the world with a total COVID-19 case count of 75.9 million and death toll of 897,377.
