New York City is approaching a COVID alert level of “high,” according to a statement from the health department, that urges New Yorkers to again wear face mask in indoor settings. For now, the city’s alert level remains “medium,” but cases are continuing to climb, driven by the omicron variant and subvariants. In an advisory, Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said people at high risk of severe illness should avoid crowded settings and limit get-togethers. “New York City is approaching “high” level of COVID-19 alert which represents high community spread and increasing pressure on the health care system,” said the advisory. “This is on the basis of three CDC COVID-19 community level indicators: new cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days, new admissions with COVID-19 per 100,000 people in the last seven days and percent of inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients.” The city is currently averaging 4,354 cases a day, up 84% from two weeks ago, according to a New York Times tracker.
